Allows Program to Expand Fleet and Student Enrollment Capacity

Jim Justice, the Governor of West Virginia, recently delivered a $2 million grant to the Fairmont State University Aviation Center of Excellence. The funds will be used to expand the program’s trainer fleet, update older aircraft, and increase enrollment.

The check was presented to students right before the start of the Fairmont State University men’s basketball game at the Feaster Center. Apparently, this was enough of a good luck charm to give the team an 82 to 61 win over Carlow.

With the $2 million, the university will be purchasing two new aircraft and a used Cessna to grow the program’s fleet. It will also support engine rebuilds and one new engine for existing aircraft. These updates will allow the aviation program to enroll 100 students at a time, which almost doubles its current capacity.

This represents a significant improvement to not only long-term operations, but also safety as a whole. Students will have greater opportunities to get hours on more modern machines.

“This investment is about setting Fairmont State University, its students, and our entire state on a flight pattern to success,” expressed Gov. Justice. “By growing this program, we’re not just adding planes and equipment—we’re improving the foundation of West Virginia’s aerospace industry and creating incredible opportunities for our young people.”

The Fairmont State College of Business and Aviation runs two degree pathways. The first is Professional Flight, which earns students a Bachelor of Science along with their private, instrument, and commercial ratings. The other, Aviation Management, prepares its students for careers ranging from airport and airline management to air traffic control.

“This will have a lasting impact on the school, the region, and our state’s workforce for years to come,” Gov. Justice continued. “When we invest in our students, we invest in a stronger, brighter future for all of West Virginia.”
