UAVs Participate At Reno For The First Time

Several Events Specifically For Unmanned Aircraft Held In 'Drone Zone'

There was a new class of aircraft at the National Championship Air Races in Reno last week ... and the pilots for those aircraft kept their feet firmly on the ground.

For the first time, UAVs were invited to participate at the event. The three-day competition was called the Small UAS Challenge which featured a variety of aircraft testing multiple skills.

The Sacramento Bee reports that the competition was staged by ERAU, and included an obstacle course, time trials, and a dead lift for the aircraft. Twenty companies and individuals were invited to participate in the event.

Nevada is one of the FAA's official UAS testing sites. ERAU says it created the event at Reno as a way to promote the unmanned segment of the industry, which continues to grow rapidly while the FAA works to craft policies and regulations governing their commercial use.
