While at EAA AirVenture 2014, ANN News Editor Tom Patton begin a quest to learn more about the heart and soul of your aircraft battery.

He sat down with Chris Holder of Concorde Batteries to dig into the details. This video is number 3 of 3 videos that Tom put together to share what he found out about this all-important piece of aircraft equipment. In this video we talk about lithium-ion considerations, and battery maintenance.
Patton asks Holder a question that many pilots are asking, and that is; what’s up with lithium-ion batteries. Holder doesn’t pull any punches when answering this question and says that Concorde Batteries does not believe lithium-ion is a technology that is ready for use in aircraft of any kind.
He points to past experiences with Boeing and Cessna, and he mentions the NTSB report recently published that asked the FAA to work with manufacturers to develop more stringent testing of lithium-ion batteries.
Patton changes the subject by asking how pilots can maintain and extend the life of their batteries. Holder goes on to talk about a program Concorde highly recommends called battery conditioning. In the video, holder goes into some of the details regarding conditioning as it relates to the time it takes and to the voltage readings expected. This video provides valuable information on Concorde battery maintenance regardless of the type of aircraft it’s installed in.
