The Layoffs Continue: TCM Cuts 60 Jobs In Mobile

Remaining Workers Will Get Time Off... Paid Or Unpaid

The hard times continue for workers in the aerospace industry. The Mobile (AL) Press-Register reports Teledyne Continental Motors laid off 60 workers Thursday and Friday, due to a sharp drop in the market for aircraft engines and parts.

TCM President Rhett Ross told the paper late Friday that approximately 25 salaried workers were handed their walking papers Thursday, with another 35 hourly workers joining them before the close of business Friday. The layoffs are considered permanent -- no furloughs here -- though Ross expressed hope some workers could be called back if the market turns around.

The layoffs leave roughly 440 workers at TCM's plant at the Brookley Field Industrial Complex plant in Mobile... and remaining employees were encouraged to use their vacation days soon. Many workers with no vacation time accrued were told to take unpaid leave, according to the Press-Register report.

TCM plans to extend its normal holiday shutdown, shutting down most of its operations through the end of the year. The company will leave a small workforce in place to handle remaining orders.

The layoffs and shutdown come less than one month after Teledyne Continental cut 20 workers from second shift production.
