Application Deadline Extended For 2007 AirVenture Cup Race

Paperwork Must Be Submitted By June 15

The Experimental Aircraft Association tells ANN pilots wanting to participate in the 10th annual AirVenture Cup Race now have until June 15 to enter, as the application deadline for entries has been extended.

The extension will allow several latecomers some needed extra time to get their paperwork in, said Eric Whyte, race chairman. Currently, there are 37 aircraft registered for the July 22 Dayton-to-Oshkosh air race.

New this year is the Sportsman Class, open to any experimental aircraft powered by Volkswagen or Corvair conversion engines. The newest class allows homebuilts like the Sonex (shown above), Sonerai and KR series to participate, and will also give some light-sport aircraft pilots a way to join the race.

From the start in Dayton, contestants will fly to Kankakee, IL (IKK) and on to a pylon turn at Rockford (RFD) followed by the sprint north to a flying finish at Lomira, WI. (IKK is also a no-penalty pit stop for the short-range airplanes, allowing them to safely participate.)

Airplanes then assemble at Fond du Lac (FLD) for an optional mass arrival into EAA AirVenture Oshkosh later in the day.

Race classes are based on engine size and also include: Unlimited - Turbocharged, <1600 cubic inches (ci); Sport - Normally aspirated engine, <1,000 ci; Sport F/X <550 ci; Formula RG - retractables with <360 ci; Formula F/X - fixed gear with <360 ci; Formula SW - Steve Wittman Tailwinds with <360 ci; Formula RV - Van’s homebuilts with <360 ci; and Formula Sprint - <240 ci.
