Airborne 05.22.20: 6-Place Bearhawk!, Virgin Orbit Launch, Cessna SkyCourier

Also: SpaceX Demo-2, Hurricane Hunters, NASA Remembers Annie Glenn, Gulfstream G280 Record

Bearhawk Aircraft has announced the introduction of its largest Bearhawk model to date, the Bearhawk 5.

The new aircraft was designed by engineer Bob Barrows and is the first in the lineup of Bearhawk aircraft to use a 300-horsepower engine, seating up to six occupants. The Bearhawk Model 5 made its first flight on May 3rd. The prototype has flown more than five hours in testing and is exhibiting excellent flight characteristics. The Bearhawk Model 5 has been under development for two years. Our friends at Virgin Orbit have released details about Virgin Orbit's first attempt to launch a payload into space from a cradle slung underneath a modified Boeing 747. They seem pretty excited... "We are extremely excited to announce that the window for our Launch Demo mission starts on Sunday, May 24th, and extends through Monday, May 25th, with an opportunity to launch from 10 A.M. – 2 P.M. Pacific each day. That means that this weekend, our 747 carrier aircraft Cosmic Girl will prepare to take off from Mojave Air and Space Port, fly out over the Pacific ocean, and release our two-stage, orbital rocket, LauncherOne — which will then proceed to ignite its engine in mid-air for the first time." The first flight of Textron's new twin utility turboprop, the Cessna SkyCourier, has taken place. The milestone flight is a significant step toward entry into service for the clean-sheet aircraft, and it kicks off the important flight test program that validates the performance of the Cessna SkyCourier. The Cessna SkyCourier took off from the company's east campus Beech Field Airport, piloted by Corey Eckhart, senior test pilot, and Aaron Tobias, chief test pilot. During the 2-hour and 15-minute flight, the team tested the aircraft's performance, stability and control, as well as its propulsion, environmental, flight controls and avionics systems. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
