National EMS Pilots Association (NEMSPA) Offers New Management Tool

Cultural Health Assessment And Mitigation Program For Safety Survey Evaluates Safety Culture

For much less than what it costs to fill the fuel tanks on a typical air medical helicopter, the National EMS Pilots Association is offering a management tool designed to save numerous lives and millions of dollars.

With the average national price for jet fuel at $5.29/gal and a typical air medical helicopter fuel capacity of 160 gallons, it costs about $846.00 to fill the tanks on a single aircraft. For $500.00, an air medical provider can administer the CHAMPS survey to all, or to selected members of their organization.

The foundation of CHAMPS is a survey developed as a collaborative project by representatives from all major segments of the air medical industry, and refined by experts on organizational culture and survey design.

The organization says the 44 question survey should take about 15 minutes to complete. The survey is specific to air medical programs, and covers all safety-sensitive employees. It is designed to help companies understand their safety culture, and compare that to the overall air medical community.
