Government Of Canada Announces Funding For Royal Aviation Museum

Will Provide $1.2 Million For Construction Costs

Dr. Doug Eyolfson, Member of Parliament (Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia-Headingley), has announced that the Canadian government will provide $1.2 million (Canadian) for the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada. Funding will help defray construction costs of a new aviation museum at the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport. Dr. Eyolfson made this announcement on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage.

This funding, provided through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, will increase the organization's ability to preserve an important part of our history and provide innovative programming.

"The Government of Canada is committed to making significant new investments in cultural infrastructure because we understand how essential these facilities are for our country's arts and heritage organizations," said The Honorable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage. "By supporting the construction of the new Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada, we are helping ensure Canadians have access to a unique facet of Canada's aviation story."

"This museum tells the story of a truly Canadian adventure: bush flying to some of the most remote, rugged and beautiful areas of our great country. I am proud to announce the Government of Canada's support for the construction of this new museum in Winnipeg, and I look forward to visiting the space once construction is complete," said Dr. Doug Eyolfson, Member of Parliament (Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia-Headingley).

"This Federal funding will help us build a new, world-class facility to celebrate the 'Legends of Canadian Aviation'-a remarkable story of adventure and innovation and an important contribution to Canada's culture and heritage," said Ms. Helen Halliday, President and CEO, Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada.

The Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada is the only major aviation museum in Canada that focuses on telling Canada's unique bush-flying story. The new 105,000 sq. ft. museum will include nine exhibition galleries, a kids centre, education program labs, library and archives space, workshop and artefact preparation area, and a collection storage area.

Located in Winnipeg, the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada was incorporated in 1974 as the Western Canada Aviation Museum. The Museum was awarded the designation of "Royal" by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, in 2014.
