New Zealand Air Force Base Suspends Operations Due To Drone Incident

Small Unmanned Aircraft Reportedly Came Within 200 Feet Of A Military Helicopter

Authorities say that a drone flew within 200 feet of an Air Force Helicopter landing at Whenuapai air base in New Zealand Monday, promoting a half-hour suspension in air operations at the base.

Stuff.co.nz reports authorities say that the drone was flying at about 3,000 feet off the coast of Browns Bay on Auckland's North Shore Monday morning at 11 a.m. (local time). The CAA was notified of the incident, according to the report.

Three days earlier, a drone was reported to be operating near Auckland International Airport in Manukau, disrupting seven flights. New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority deputy director Steve Moore said he was "hopping mad" about the incident. "The idiots who are doing this are putting people's lives at risk and need to be identified before something catastrophic happens," he said.

CAA regulations prevent drone flights above 400 feet. Drones must be flown only during the day and be in plain sight of the person flying the aircraft.
