Compact ADS-B Out Mode S Transponder For Flight In Class A Airspace
FreeFlight Systems has introduced the RANGR FDL-1090TX system, a compact, high-performance Mode S 1090MHz extended squitter (1090ES) transponder that pairs with a WAAS/GPS to make a rule-compliant ADS-B Out installation in aircraft operating in Class A airspace. The foundation of a comprehensive, long-term ADS-B solution, the system can be expanded with a FreeFlight Systems 978MHz receiver for weather, traffic and other ADS-B datalink services.
The RANGR FDL-1090-TX is one of the smallest Mode S transponders for GA aircraft and weighs less than 1 pound with the compact panel-mounted controller and built-in altitude encoder. The controller’s intuitive controls feature positive-control knobs and push buttons for squawk codes, IDENT, VFR and for viewing ADS-B position data on the sunlight-readable, backlit LCD display.
Designed for straightforward installation, the system’s remote transponder may be mounted anywhere within the airframe. The RANGR FDL-1090-TX is available alone or with the FreeFlight Systems 1201 WAAS/GPS and GPS antenna in an optional certified and pre-configured ADS-B Out system bundle. To enable ADS-B In weather and traffic, the FDL-1090-TX may be expanded with a FreeFlight Systems RANGR or XPLORER datalink receiver. The RANGR FDL-978-RX receiver is a TSO-approved system for certified installation with a compatible display.
“With the impending ADS-B Out equipage deadline, aircraft owners want flexible avionics options that best meet their specific aircraft and flying needs vs. a one-size-fits-all selection,” said Tim Taylor, CEO of FreeFlight Systems. “The RANGR FDL-1090-TX provides that flexibility for aircraft that operate at FL180 and above. With our modular systems, pilots can equip for ADS-Out now and add ADS-B In datalink support at the same time or in the future. They also know that their investment in avionics is protected with a built-in upgrade path as new and enhanced ADS-B services come online.”
The RANGR FDL-1090-TX is priced at $3,995 when purchased alone. It is available with the FreeFlight Systems 1201 WAAS/GPS and GPS antenna in a complete bundle priced at $6,570.
