Augusta, GA Regional Airport Teams With Richmond County Schools

Establishes Program To Get High School Students Interested In Aviation Careers

A professional shadowing program has been created through a collaboration between the Augusta, GA Regional Airport (KAGS) and the Richmond County School System designed to generate interest in aviation careers among high school students.

The Augusta Chronicle reports that two students are selected each summer to spend four weeks shadowing airport employees engaged in aircraft maintenance, avionics, flight training, airfield operations and other areas to expose them to a broad spectrum of potential aviation careers.

This year, the participants are Marco Brown, a student at T.W. Josey High School, and Jinyee Ortiz, who attends Cross Creek High School. Brown told the paper that he hopes the experience will help him made a decision about a career. He is entering Georgia State University in the fall, majoring in physics or aerospace engineering.

The Richmond County School System has worked with the airport, as well as Textron and other local businesses on the program with an eye towards helping them replace an aging workforce that is nearing retirement.
