The Aerospace Center for Excellence is proud to partner with the Bob Hoover Legacy Foundation to offer two inaugural scholarships in honor of the legendary aviator. Subject awards will provide $10,000 to two flight students currently pursuing Commercial Pilot certification. Both students received scholarships for Private Pilot training by dint of the James C. Ray Flight Training Scholarship, which is also administered by the Aerospace Center for Excellence.

FAA Authorizes Dual Electronic Ignitions for Select Piston Aero Engines

On 24 July 2023, SureFly Partners announced at EAA’s AirVenture 2023 that the FAA had approved use of the company’s electronic-ignition solution on select four and six-cylinder Lycoming and Continental aircraft engines. The STC approval authorizes installation of two SureFly Ignition Modules (“SIMs”) per-engine on a broad cross-section of aircraft piston engines.

In May 2023, DeltaHawk’s DHK180 powerplant was granted FAA Type Certification. Comes now July 2023 and DeltaHawk’s announcement that the company is accepting reservation deposits for its DHK180 piston aero-engine, with initial deliveries slated to commence in the first half of 2024. The jet fuel burning, 180-horsepower DHK180 is the first of a planned family of DeltaHawk engines and offers ease of operation, high fuel efficiency, reduced maintenance, and superior altitude performance compared to traditional aircraft piston engines.

Controversial Retirement Age Limit Bump Passes Through House

Airline Pilots See Step Towards 2 More Prime Earning Years Before Retirement

The US House of Representatives passed H.R. 3935, "The Security Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act", which will, among other things, bump the mandatory pilot retirement age from 65 to 67 years of age. The idea of increasing retirement ages isn't anything new, particularly after the 65-year age limit replaced the earlier 63-year pilot max years ago. Reception is uneven, surprisingly enough. Some carrier execs look at projections of a mass retirement wave from aging Baby Boomers with dread, seeing an uncomfortably shallow pipeline of qualified replacements in the industry.

Good News for MD 530F Owners: Free MGTOW Upgrade On the Way

New Weight Limit Rises to 3,350 Lbs, a 250-Lb Upgrade

MD Helicopters has begun offering its MD 530F Maximum Gross Take Off Weight Upgrade to operators of F-model helicopters as a free upgrade. The firm says the move is "a part of the company’s continuing efforts to increase customer support and service", upgrading owner's aircraft from their former MGTOW of 3,100 pounds to 3,350. They describe it as an "internal weight increase, with a new Vne of 150 knots. Maximum external load gross weight, minimum flying weight, and the center of gravity remain unchanged.

Lee Aerospace Modification Now Part of Every 260/360 King Air for Improved Passenger Comfort

Beechcraft has reached into the aftermarket scene to include a customer favorite as part of its package of standard equipment, with the inclusion of Lee Aerospace CoolView windows on future King Air 260s and 360s. The change will "minimize heat transfer into the cabin on the ramp and offer an unprecedented level of passenger comfort and cabin cooling", working well with last December's addition of standard electric air conditioning. That feature allowed cool air circulation during ground and flight operations, making it a winning combination for those opting for a new production King Air in 2024.

NTSB Prelim: Aeronca 7CCM

The Airplane Was Located By Aerial Search Personnel And First Responders In A Densely Wooded Area

On June 21, 2023, at 0714 central daylight time, an Aeronca 7CCM airplane, N308ED, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Duluth, Minnesota. The pilot and passenger were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) air traffic control (ATC) recording revealed that the airplane departed Duluth International Airport (DLH), Duluth, Minnesota, at 0659 and proceeded northeast.
