K-State Aviation Launches Helicopter Training Program

Eleven Pilots Have Trained On School's Schweizer 300CBi

Kansas State University Aviation tells ANN it recently implemented a training program for helicopter pilots. In the program's first year, 11 pilots have trained on K-State's Schweizer 300CBi, specifically developed for the commercial helicopter training market.

An injected Lycoming HIO-360-G1A piston engine rated at 180 continuous horsepower powers the Schweizer (type shown below), purchased new by K-State in 2007. K-State Aviation has put 350 flight hours on the helicopter, training university flight students, law enforcement personnel, and private aviators.

"The 300CBi is a great complement to our other training aircraft, ranging from Cessna 172s with Garmin glass cockpits to the university's Cessna CitationJet," said Bill Gross, professor of aviation and chief pilot at K-State. "The helicopter has been particularly popular with law enforcement personnel. We've had Highway Patrol and Police Department pilots in training in addition to private fliers and, of course, our students."

K-State has a fleet of 50 learning aircraft and more Master Certified Flight Instructors than any other college or university in the country. Located on the K-State at Salina campus, the fastest growing college within K-State offers a well-rounded Big 12 university experience shared by 1,000 students in a high tech campus environment.

K-State at Salina awards degrees in technology management, engineering technology, aircraft maintenance, and offers an affordable professional pilot education.
