Is That Smoking, Non-Smoking Or Freight?

Cuban Ships Herself To Miami In Wooden Crate

Imagine the looks on the faces of the DHL ground crew in Miami (FL) as they unloaded that big wooden crate from a flight that originated in the Bahamas.

Inside the box, curled up, was a woman. A Cuban woman.

There was no immediate indication of how the woman got from Cuba to the Bahamas, although Customs and Border Protection spokesman Zach Mann told Miami's NBC6 she did it "apparently with the assistance of others. Certainly she's lucky to be alive."

Under the so-called wet-foot/dry-foot policy, Cubans who make it to the US mainland are generally allowed to stay. Officials said the woman, whose name they declined to release, would be processed and released. She did not require medical attention.

Commercial aircraft stowaways, while not unheard of, are none too common. In March, a man who rode from the Dominican Republic to Miami in the wheel well of an American Airlines jet was sent home. The month before, a man who shipped himself from New York to Texas in a crate was sentenced to four months' house arrest and a $1,500 fine.
