Suspect Says Bomb Threat Against Florida Flight Schools Was A 'Joke'

National Aviation Academy In Florida Threatened On Thursday

A 32-year-old Gulfport, FL resident said the bomb threat he phoned in Thursday against National Aviation Academy  was a "joke," but authorities are not seeing the humor.

Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies used phone records to track down John Mitchell Doherty after he reportedly made "several" phone calls to the flight school Thursday saying there was a bomb set to detonate at the school. Television station WTSP reports that both the school and a nearby fitness center were evacuated because of the threat.

No reason was given as to why Doherty targeted the flight school. He has been charged with two counts of making a false report of a bomb, and is in the Pinellas County jail in lieu of $20,000 bond. The station reports he told authorities he is "sorry" for making the threats.
