SpaceX Starship Prototype Suffers 'Anomaly' During Pressure Test

Stainless Steel Tank Few Off Test Stand In Texas

A pressure test for the SpaceX Starship prototype ended Friday when a stainless steel tank was blown off the test stand in Boca Chica, Texas during the test.

The incident occurred about 10 p.m. Friday and was captured on video by a Boca Chica resident. The prototype Starship spacecraft failed to contain liquid nitrogen, and the cylinder flew off the stand, leaving a pile of mangled stainless steel, according to a report from Florida Today.

The failure is seen as a minor setback for SpaceX, which operates on a "Test-Fail-Fix" philosophy. This particular Starship prototype was only intended to fly a suborbital mission.

In California, SpaceX has secured permission to assemble Starships at the Port of Los Angeles. Musk is looking to the spacecraft to fulfill his ambition to send humans to Mars.

Current plans call for the Starship to be lofted into orbit using a Super Heavy Booster and launch from the Kennedy Space Center.
