Airbus On Track To Beat Boeing For Sales In 2015

Reports Many More Orders As Year Draws To A Close

It looks like Airbus will beat Boeing for new airplane orders in 2015, and by a significant number.

The blog ondair.net reports that Airbus has booked 850 firm orders for 2015 compared to 568 for Boeing. In Boeing's latest report, it indicated there had been eight new orders for Boeing 737s from "undisclosed customers," but also reported eight cancellations for the same airplane. That could mean that the new orders were conversions from 737 NG airplanes to the new MAX variant. Overall, Boeing reported its gross plane orders at 655 for the year against 87 cancellations.

Airbus' numbers were buoyed by an announcement last Thursday of an order for 45 A320neo and 15 A321neo airplanes to Chinese discount carrier Spring Air valued at about $6.3 billion.

The blog reports that Airbus' orders appear to be actual new orders rather than conversions.

China is expected to be a major customer for single-aisle airplanes from both planemakers in the next 20 years, but for now, the blog reports, Airbus is winning the order book competition.
