Alternative Motor Design to Power Uncrewed Cargo Jet, Retrofitted Legacy Aircraft
Duxion Motors has signed an MOU with Dymond Aerospace that will supply 200 of their eJet motors for use in Dymond's uncrewed cargo aircraft.
Under the deal, Duxion will supply 20 eJet motors per year for a decade, eventually totaling $500 million Canadian dollars as deliveries continue through 2036. The Duxion motor was chosen for its proprietary rim-driven design to allow for an improved power to weight ratio compared to traditional shaft-driven turbines. The unorthodox eJet, when used in the Dymond Aerospace aircraft, is expected to be capable of producing more than 8,000 lbs of thrust, allowing them to sufficiently approximate the output of a CRJ100 aircraft. Each aircraft will be outfitted with a pair of Duxion eJets powered by hydrogen fuel cells.
To bolster their production efforts, Duxion will add a 70,000 sq ft hangar space at Stephenville Dymon International Airport for the integration and installation of eJet propulsion systems. The facility will be sufficient to perform retrofits of eJet motors for legacy aircraft outside of the Dymond Aero partnership.
“Dymond Aerospace is a terrific partner for Duxion as we share a passion for electrifying the aviation sector with complimentary product offerings. Our eJet motor™ technology is a perfect fit for Dymond’s unmanned cargo aircraft with our patented technology providing best in class thrust to weight ratios as well as a low total cost of ownership which is achieved by having relatively few moving parts, high reliability, and with accordingly reduced maintenance expenses,” said Rick Pilgrim, chairman and chief executive officer of Duxion. “With our ground prototype expected to be completed this Fall, we look forward to a long and successful partnership.”
