One Week Left: FAA Issues GENOTS Concerning TIPH Procedures

TIPH Heading For Extinction?

NBAA is noting the issuance of two General Notices (GENOTS) affecting FAA Orders 7110.65R (Air Traffic Control) and 7210.3U (Facility Operation and Administration) concerning TIPH procedures. Both GENOTS go into affect March 20, 2006.

In order for TIPH to be used at any towered airport in the US as of March 20, the manager of that facility will have to have determined that an operational need exists considering factors such as capacity, efficiency, and user input. A Facility Directive, approved by the appropriate FAA Terminal Service Unit Area Director, must be in place by that time.

At facilities where TIPH continues to be used after March 20, 2006, actual procedures for the use of TIPH will also go into affect. These changed procedures include notifying aircraft that have been cleared "into position and hold" about aircraft on approach to the occupied runway, as well as aircraft on approach to parallel runways separated by less than 2,500 feet. Aircraft cleared to land on a runway will receive similar warnings about aircraft cleared to taxi into position and hold on runways other than the one they are on approach to separated by less than 2,500 feet.
