Two Fatally Injured BASE Jumping In California

Had Leapt From Taft Point In Yosemite National Park

Extreme Athlete Dean Potter and his climbing partner Graham Hunt were fatally injured BASE jumping from a 7,500-foot promontory named Taft Point in Yosemite National Park Saturday. A helicopter crew located the bodies of the two Sunday morning in Yosemite Valley, according to a report from Fox News.

The two were well known in the park's climbing community. Potter had drawn criticism after a "free solo" climb of Utah's Delicate Arch in Arches National Park in May 2006. It was one of several climbs he had accomplished on rock formations without safety equipment.

Potter and Hunt had jumped from Taft Point wearing wingsuits. BASE jumping is illegal in all national parks, and the two had possibly jumped at dusk or after dark to avoid detection by park rangers, according to authorities.

Park ranger Scott Gediman said that the pair's parachutes had not been deployed.
