Airborne 08.25.17: Nat'l Aerobatic Championships, Compass Airlines, AZ CAF

Also: General Atomics, Aero-Verse, 407GXP, Asteroid Passage, Duncan Aviation, Flyadeal, Mi-28UB

Some of the nation’s best aerobatic aircraft pilots will gather to compete on September 23-29 as the US National Aerobatic Championships come to Oshkosh for the first time, hosted by the International Aerobatic Club.

The event moved to Oshkosh this year after spending most of the past 45 years at Denison, Texas. Approximately 100 pilots will compete in five separate categories during the week, ranging from Primary to Unlimited. In addition, the top finishers in the Advanced (second-highest) category will earn berths on the U.S. team that will compete next year at the world championships in Strejnic, Romania. It’s a good step forward... First year, First Officer pay at Compass Airlines will soon be the highest in the regional airline industry.  Compass is pleased to announce that effective October 1, 2017, its first year, First Officer pay will increase to $41.00 per flight hour. Additionally, First Officers at all pay steps will receive an increase. "The nationwide pilot shortage has made it challenging for regional airlines to meet hiring targets," said Rick Leach, President and Chief Executive Officer of Compass Airlines. The Arizona Commemorative Air Force Museum (AZCAF) has acquired a Grumman TBM-3E Avenger from the Quonset Air Museum, Rhode Island. The Avenger is best known as the premier Navy carrier-based torpedo attack bomber of World War II and as the type of airplane flown by President George H.W. Bush when he was shot down in the Pacific.  AZCAF volunteers flew to Rhode Island to disassemble the Avenger and load it onto a trailer for transport to Mesa, Arizona. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
