Pilot Slightly Injured When Plane Crashes On CA Highway

Piper Dakota Destroyed In The Accident

The pilot of a Piper Dakota suffered only minor injuries when the plane went down Friday on a highway in Modesto, CA.

The Modesto Bee reports that the pilot of the plane issued a "Mayday" call at about 7:48 p.m. The aircraft impacted Highway 99 a few minutes later, according to authorities.

The pilot was the only person on board the aircraft at the time of the accident. The plane was on fire when first responders arrived. Police said it did not hit any cars as it came down on the highway, but it "did sideswipe something" according to CHP public affairs officer Tom Olsen.

The pilot was described as a 59-year-old man from Santa Cruz. Olsen said the freeway was closed for several hours while an initial investigation was conducted.
