Vintage Spitfire Down In Ashford, Kent U.K.

Pilot Walks Away After Bringing Plane Down In A Field

The pilot of a vintage Supermarine Spitfire was not seriously injured in a forced landing Monday in a field near Ashford in Kent, U.K.

The U.K. newspaper The Independent reports that the pilot, who was not identified, was able to exit the airplane under his own power before first responders arrived at the accident scene. The plane came down in a field near Woodchurch around 10 a.m. local time, according to the report.

Witness Elizabeth King said she heard the plane flying overhead. "It then stuttered and cut out. We then heard a whoosh sound." She posted a photo she took of the plane in the field on Twitter.

First responders said the pilot sustained "only minor injuries" and was not transported to a hospital. Officials said that a "large quantity of aviation fuel" had been spilled as a result of the forced landing.
