Sporty's Awards Three Aviation Scholarships

University Of Cincinnati Students Honored

Aero-News has learned three University of Cincinnati students enrolled in the university’s Professional Pilot program have been awarded scholarships from Sporty’s for the 2007-08 academic year.

Matt Bengel, 20, of Cincinnati, was awarded the $5000 Sporty’s Scholarship, funded by The Sporty’s Foundation. Bengel is beginning his second year in the program and his plans include a flying career both with the military reserve and also with an airline.

Steve Warther, 18, of Cincinnati and Alex Glueck, 29, originally from Farnborough, England, and now residing in Cincinnati, were each awarded $5000 Vorbeck Aviation Scholarships. Each student will continue his coursework and training in the Fall semester. Warther plans a military or corporate flying career, while Glueck plans a corporate flying career. These scholarships are named for Hall of Fame instructor Joe Vorbeck, a co-founder of Sporty’s Academy and chief architect of the Professional Pilot Program.

These scholarships were awarded in May at a reception for donors and recipients at UC Clermont’s Student Activities Center.

“This event was an opportunity for the scholarship donors to see first hand the help they are providing local students as well as a chance for scholarship recipients to thank those directly responsible for funding their aviation education,” said Eric Radtke, Sporty’s Academy president.
