NBAA Joins Call For House To Pass FAA Reauthorization

Bolen Says Now Is Not The Time To Debate ATC Privatization And Stall The Bill

The NBAA has joined with a host of other aviation associations in sending a letter to U.S. House leaders urging them to pass a broadly supported bipartisan bill to reauthorize the FAA “that can find its way to the president’s desk” before the agency’s current funding extension expires next month.

The groups’ letter was sent to House Majority Leader Paul Ryan (R-1-WI), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-12-CA), and members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

The letter noted that aviation stakeholders wish to see an FAA funding bill passed with strong support from both parties, in line with the Senate FAA reauthorization measure (H.R.636), which was passed by a large, bipartisan majority in April.

In contrast to the House reauthorization bill (H.R.4441), the Senate bill does not include controversial language to create a privatized air traffic control (ATC) system funded by new user fees and overseen by an airline-dominated board of directors.

“Our organizations represent millions of hard working taxpayers that want Congress to get things done and not let this important bill be stalled because of a provision that divides our community and many within Congress,” the letter added.

NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen said the Senate bill, “sets an example for how we can get a bill passed with enthusiastic support from the aviation industry, and has strong support not only on both sides of the aisle, but with lawmakers throughout both chambers of Congress.

“It’s time for lawmakers to set aside the risky and unpopular ATC privatization provision, and enact legislation that fully supports system modernization by matching targeted solutions to identified challenges, so we can focus on ensuring that America’s aviation system continues to lead the world five, 10 and 25 years from today," Bolen added.

The current funding extension for the FAA runs through July 15.
