Airborne 07.31.20: FAA DPE Scandal, CAF FM2 Wildcat, Gulfstream G700 Tests

Also: XPONENTIAL Goes Virtual, Hurricane Hunters, ALPA: FedEx Hong Kong Pilots, FCC Fines Hobbyking $2.8M

The FAA has confirmed that severe issues of an unspecified nature are causing them to force as many as several hundred pilots to be retested for checkrides they may have taken over the course of some 11 years.

The FAA states, "This notice provides current guidance to FAA aviation safety inspectors (ASI) on program policies and procedures for reexamining individuals holding pilot certificates with various ratings who were tested by Michael A. Puehler of Cincinnati, Ohio. The reexamination will ensure that these individuals meet the standards of Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) part 61 to hold their certificates and/or ratings." The Commemorative Air Force’s FM2 Wildcat is set to participate in the upcoming 75th Anniversary Commemoration of the End of World War II events, scheduled to take place in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, from August 29 to September 2, 2020. On Saturday, July 25, the aircraft and pilot Mike Polley boarded USS Essex (LHD 2) to bring the aircraft from San Diego to Pearl Harbor for the commemoration activities. Gulfstream is talking up their G700 flight-test program and the progress they are reportedly making progress with a number of accomplishments in testing and performance. The G700 was introduced in October 2019. The G700 has flown more than 100 test flights, recently completed company flutter testing and expanded the flight envelope at both high and low speeds. As part of Gulfstream’s testing efforts, the aircraft also flew beyond its maximum operating speed and cruise altitude, reaching Mach 0.99 and an altitude of 54,000 feet. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
