United Offers Free Flight To Air Force Cadets

But Delta Flew The AF Football Team To Annapolis Under Contract

It's always a big rivalry when the nation's service academies meet in a sporting contest. But the Navy-Air Force football game Saturday was in limbo because of the government shutdown.

Many games have been suspended because of the budget impasse. United Airlines said they would help out by offering to fly the visiting Air Force team to Baltimore, MD near Annapolis to play in the sold-out, nationally televised game, according to a report in USA Today.

In a move that has brought them a lot of free publicity if nothing else, the airline sent out a Tweet that said "We hate cancellations, so we're offering to fly @AF_Academy to this year's Air Force-Navy game. Retweet if you agree."

United said the offer was serious, and not just a publicity grab.

But as it turns out, Delta Airlines is the official charter airline for Air Force football, and a chartered Delta Boeing 757 left Colorado Springs Thursday afternoon bound for KBWI with the football team aboard.

The game will go on as scheduled.
