A $15 million development deal closed more than a year ago between Pima County, AZ and World View, which hopes to carry passengers to the fringe of space under a massive balloon, has been struck down by an Arizona judge, leaving the status of the project in limbo.

Working under the agreement, World View has already constructed a 700-foot wide launch pad and headquarters facilities, with some offices already occupied by World View employees. The plan called for World View to lease the facility for 10 years, paying between $675,000 to $1.62 million annually in lease fees. Since 2000, Bombardier Global aircraft have achieved more than 2,500 takeoffs and landings at Aspen’s challenging airport. Take our word for it, operations that this high-altitude facility can be... interesting. Delivering a steep approach capability like no other aircraft in their class, Global business jets demonstrate renowned agility and deft landing capabilities at Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, which is nestled among Rocky Mountain peaks at approximately 7,820 feet above sea level. One of the things new drone operators have to learn about very quickly is the concept of a Temporary Flight Restriction, which we have known for years as a TFR. Violating a TFR can carry serious consequences, even if you stray into one unintentionally. For drone operators, the threat to life and limb is maybe not so immediate, but as Jonathan Rupprecht of the Rupprecht Law Firm recently wrote in his blog, there can still be serious consequences. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
