FAA Awards $250K Grant To New Mexico Spaceport

Dollars Earmarked For Vehicle Vertical Launch Preparations

The FAA has awarded a grant of $250,000 to New Mexico Spaceport for "roll-back integration" of vertical-launch space vehicles. The process prepares the spacecraft for launch.

Construction is still going on at Spaceport America, a $209 million vertical and horizontal launch facility in southern New Mexico. The Farmington, NM Daily Times reports that, in announcing the grant, Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) said the investment in Spaceport America is also an investment in the local economy.

Sir Richard Branson has already committed to basing Virgin Galactic at the New Mexico site, and offering 2 1/2 hour suborbital flights to anyone with $200,000 to pay for the ride.
