White Knight Working For Government

X-37 Tests Begin

White Knight, the airplane used to air launch SpaceShipOne is soon to carry the X-37. White Knight has been conducting fit and high-speed taxi checks recently with the attached spacecraft in Mojave, CA.

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) spokesman, Jan Walker said that the Approach and Landing Test Vehicle (ALTV) has been at the Mojave airport since mid-April.

"The first taxi test occurred earlier this month. In addition to the taxi tests, the ALTV also plans captive carry flights and drop tests. The tests will continue through this summer, but we've not announced any specific dates," said Walker to SPACE.com.

Built by Boeing, the X-37 is designed to test airframe, propulsions, and operational technologies to make space transportation more affordable. The unpiloted vehicle is designed to conduct orbital and reentry operations and experiments at speeds around Mach 25.
