Rossiya Airlines Of Russia Introduces iPad EFB Operations

Integration Of Jeppesen iPad EFB Technology To Increase Efficiency, Reduce Use Of Paper Flight Materials

Rossiya Airlines, a part of the Aeroflot Group of Russia, recently introduced iPad-based Class 2 electronic flight bag (EFB) technology for its aircraft fleet, featuring Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro. Jeppesen, a part of Boeing Digital Aviation, will help to eliminate paper-based flight information, reduce fuel consumption and increase overall operational efficiency for the airline.

Earlier this year, Rossiya Airlines gained operational authorization to use iPad EFB Class 2 technology in all phases of flight from the Russian aviation authorities. The airline now has entered Jeppesen’s EFB solution on iPad into operation to eliminate paper-based flight materials.

"The introduction of modern information technologies for the flight-crew is an important event for our airline, as we have achieved an entirely new level of training and flight operations, said Yury Shchepilov, chief of Rossiya Airlines Aeronautical Information Service Department. “The decision to use iPads instead of bulky and expensive specialized equipment allows this project to be as efficient as possible and opens up great prospects in the future.”

Rossiya Airlines mounted Class 2 EFB on iPad will digitally replace the traditional pilot flight bag that includes Jeppesen navigation information, Runway Analysis charts and operation manuals. Traditional flight bags are heavy (weighing up to 50 lbs), so replacement of paper documents will lead to significantly reduced fuel consumption. The solution also helps the airline operate in an optimum engine mode to further decrease fuel consumption and engine wear.

Flight safety enhancements for Rossiya Airlines now include rapid flight data updates and simplified access and processing of information during flight. Vast amounts of information, including aeronautical charts, ICAO documents, maps and operations manuals are now available at the fingertips of Rossiya Airlines pilots. “Integrating Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro will provide Rossiya Airlines with the tools necessary to reduce pilot workload, increase operational efficiency and lower overall costs,” said Tim Huegel, director, Jeppesen Aviation Portfolio Management. “We salute Rossiya Airlines and the Aeroflot Group for their achievements in introducing dynamic EFB technology for paperless operations in Russia.”
