Six Boston TSA Screeners' Jobs In Jeopardy

Agency Cites 'Inattention' In Baggage-Screening Area

The TSA has begun termination procedures for six baggage screeners at Boston's Logan International Airport because of "inattention" to their jobs. They were reportedly distracted by their cell phones and other electronic devices while screening luggage for explosives.

The Associated Press reports that 14 other TSA employees were suspended following a routine audit of closed-circuit video in the baggage screening area. Those slated for firing or suspended were reportedly observed not paying close enough attention to the machines that screen checked luggage for explosives. TSA said that the six that face losing their jobs did not properly respond to baggage that triggered alarms as required by protocols. When the alarm sounds, the bags are supposed to be taken to a separate room for further inspection, which did not occur in all cases. The agency reports that no dangerous materials were placed on airplanes.

“All TSA employees are held to the highest standards of conduct and accountability,” the agency said Tuesday in a statement. “These standards are critical to our work and TSA’s commitment to the safety of the traveling public.”
