USAFA Grounds Entire Aero Fleet

Blame Maintenance Woes, Safety Concerns

Worried about maintenance records and aircraft safety, the US Air Force Academy has grounded 45 gliders, trainers and skydiving aircraft, leaving most cadets altogether flightless.

The suspension, ordered by Brig. Gen. John Weida, covers TG-10B, TG-10C and TG-10D unpowered gliders and TG-14 motorgliders of the 94th Flying Training Squadron, T-41 and Cessna 150 single-engine aircraft of the 557th Flying Training Squadron, and UV-18 Twin Otter jump-platform aircraft of the 98th Flying Training Squadron.

Diamond DA-20 aircraft used for primary flight training are not affected by the order.

Weida's decision came after a three-day inspection by aircraft mechanics. They found the academy's aircraft were plagued by problems that included data management, parts control and maintenance.
