FAA: Talk To Us Before You Close Buchanan Field

California County Officials Looking At Plowing Under Airport

Before Contra Costa County (CA) leaders decide to shut down Buchanan Field and turn it into a housing project, they'd better talk with the FAA.

That's the gist of a letter sent to County Supervisor Mark DeSaulnier by Woodie Woodward, the FAA's associate administrator for airports, according to a local newspaper, the Tri-Valley Herald.

In the letter, dated June 17th, Woodward said, once the county has decided it wants to shut down Buchanan, it needs to notify the FAA, which "will review that request and any supporting information."

The FAA says the only way Buchanan Field will be shut down is if Contra Costa County builds a new airport with facilities equal to or better than those already at Buchanan.

County officials and airport advocates have been locked in battle over Buchanan Field for more than a year, as ANN first reported last July 4th.
