AirVenture 2021 Planning Continues — Advance Tickets on Sale

At last week's fall meeting – held in a virtual format – the EAA board of directors supported the ongoing planning efforts for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2021, which will be held July 26-August 1 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh. Among those preparations are incorporating best practices for large public events that can be incorporated at Oshkosh next year. "There will be AirVenture in 2021, as it is so important for all of us in every segment of the aviation community," said Jack J. Pelton, EAA CEO and Chairman of the Board.

AMA leaders are expressing appreciation to Senators Todd Young and Mike Braun for issuing a letter advocating on behalf of the model aircraft community to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in response to the FAA’s proposed rule on Remote ID. The Contract Will Create An Agility Prime Urban Air Mobility (UAM) Simulator

Avilution has been awarded a 6 month Air Force “Agility Prime” Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) contract for a joint research and development effort with Auburn University’s Vehicle Systems, Dynamics, and Design Lab (VSDDL). The contract will create an Agility Prime Urban Air Mobility (UAM) simulator for use across the entire lifecycle of the Agility Prime Program: Design, Development, Testing, and Operations. NTSB Prelim: Cessna 172

The Controller Lost Sight Of The Airplane And Lost All Communication With The Pilot

On October 30, 2020 about 1905 mountain daylight time, a Cessna 172M airplane, N124TW, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Billings, Montana. The pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 cross-country flight. According to air traffic control, the pilot reported wind shear and turbulence and had difficulties in continuing its flight at night with strong headwinds. The pilot also reported that he was not able to climb to an altitude to safely navigate mountainous terrain and needed to divert to Billings Logan International Airport (BIL), Billings, Montana.

AD: Leonardo S.p.a. Helicopters

AD 2020-23-07 Was Prompted By The Inadvertent Activation And Deployment Of A Raft While The Helicopter Was In Flight

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive for all Leonardo S.p.a. Model AB139 and AW139 helicopters. This AD requires removing certain emergency life raft (raft) reservoirs (reservoirs) from service, inspecting the reservoirs and raft actuator cables (actuator cables), and depending on the inspection results, replacing the reservoir or adjusting the actuator cable. This AD was prompted by the inadvertent activation and deployment of a raft while the helicopter was in flight. The actions of this AD are intended to address an unsafe condition on these products. This AD becomes effective December 4, 2020.

Coupled Approach An instrument approach performed by the aircraft autopilot, and/or visually depicted on the flight director, which is receiving position information and/or steering commands from onboard navigational equipment. In general, coupled non-precision approaches must be flown manually (autopilot disengaged) at altitudes lower than 50 feet AGL below the minimum descent altitude, and coupled precision approaches must be flown manually (autopilot disengaged) below 50 feet AGL unless authorized to conduct autoland operations. Coupled instrument approaches are commonly flown to the allowable IFR weather minima established by the operator or PIC, or flown VFR for training and safety.
