Defending GPS, DoD Fights Forcefully Against Ligado FCC Licensing

The Ghost of LightSquared Appears To Be Determined To Haunt/Harm Aviation

As previously noted, a revamp of the highly criticized LightSquared program has appeared under a new name -- Ligado. Worse; despite ample evidence of its dangers (especially to aviation interests), the FCC has greenlit this project after heretofore having kept it at bay... and many on the aerospace community are none too happy about it. Ligado Networks has plans to deploy a low-power terrestrial network in the L-Band, but the technology has a number of documented issues with interference with GPS utilization... and the DoD, in particular, is ready to go to war to stop it.

Coast Guard, With Naval Assist, Medevacs Man 400 Miles Off Virginia Coast

MH-60 Jayhawk Helicopter And An HC-130 Hercules Called In

The Coast Guard medevaced a man from a tanker ship approximately 400 miles off the coast of Virginia, last Friday evening. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard’s Fifth District command center were notified by a crewmember on the tanker ship Arctic Flounder that a chief officer aboard had shown symptoms of a possible stroke. Aircrews aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and an HC-130 Hercules airplane from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina launched to assist.
