Embry-Riddle Group Secures EPA Grant

Can Drones Help Improve Air-Quality?

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the private, U.S. institution specializing in aviation and aerospace programs, has been awarded a $25,000 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant under the auspices of the agency’s People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) program. The Embry-Riddle student group to which the grant was awarded is studying means by which Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) may be employed to help to improve air-quality.

The anti-aviation Santa Monica City Council has resolved to close SMO by 2028—approving a closure plan and timeline during a 24 January 2023 meeting. Santa Monica Mayor Gleam Davis blathered, “This is the beginning of a community process to reimagine the Airport site, which accounts for an unprecedented 4.3-percent of the city’s land.” Forbes family member and inaugural United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Forbes Kerry is once again facing criticism for his family’s surreptitious sale of a Gulfstream GIV-SP.

United Airlines IAH Operations to Expand

IAH Terminal Refurbishments Proceeding Apace

In January 2023, United Airlines (UAL)—the Chicago-headquartered U.S. airline with eight hubs and flight operations spanning six continents—opened a new training center at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). Dubbed the Global Inflight Training Center, United Airlines officials state the new 56,000-square-foot facility will create upwards of 1,800 jobs in the Greater Houston area and train six-hundred new United flight attendants monthly.

On 23 February 2023, Lilium announced it had partnered with Raytheon Technologies subsidiary Collins Aerospace, an American technology company prominent among aerospace and defense concerns, to design, develop, and build the Lilium Jet’s inceptors—the cockpit sidestick control mechanisms by which pilots will guide the Lilium Jet in flight.

Philippines Reacts To Cessna Mishaps

Island Nation’s Civil Aviation Authority Expresses Alarm

On 22 February 2023, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) expressed alarm over the high number of mishaps involving Cessna aircraft over the last four years. According to CAAP records, the period spanning 2019 to 2022 saw 33 incidents and accidents involving Cessna light, single-piston engine, and one multi-piston engine aircraft.
