Airborne 07.10.15: Jim Bede Passes, Electro-CriCri Channel-Cross, Cool City STC

Just as we were putting this episode of Airborne to bed late Thursday, we learned two pieces of news... good and bad. Unfortunately, we have confirmed that sport aviation pioneer and designer Jim Bede passed away July 9th, due to a sudden illness.

On a more positive note, we can report that Airbus will not get the drop on Pipistrel by being the first to electro-fly the English Channel... because a twin-engine electric CRI-CRI went ahead and did it -- and before the authorities could stop him, too. NASA Selects Astronauts For First U.S. Commercial Spaceflights

Four To Enter Training For First Commercial Launch

NASA has selected four astronauts to train and prepare for commercial spaceflights that will return American launches to U.S. soil and further open up low-Earth orbit transportation to the private sector. The selections are the latest major milestone in the Obama Administration’s plan to partner with U.S. industry to transport astronauts to space, create good-paying American jobs and end the nation’s sole reliance on Russia for space travel.

Replaces Air Force Col. Robert Behnken

NASA’s Director of Flight Operations Brian Kelly has appointed U.S. Navy Capt. Christopher Cassidy as the chief of the Astronaut Office. Cassidy replaces Air Force Col. Robert Behnken, who has held the position since August 2012.
