Southwest's Uniforms Reflect Progress

...on Some Fronts, Anyway

When Southwest Airlines launched its three-city route system over Texas thirty-two years ago, nobody talked about what everyone knows today: the airline still has not written off a hull due to an accident; it is the largest airline to post a profit throughout the September 11 shakeout; it still flies only 737s, three decades into the game; and Southwest has become the model for virtually every profitable airline in the 21st Century.

What people talked about were the stewardesses, and their uniforms.

Some of the original stewardesses still work for the airline. They're not "stewardesses," of course; they're not all Flight Attendants, either; but the airline spokeswoman we talked with said that some, now nudging 60 years old, remember those early days, and still can wear their old hot pants and go-go boots -- just, not at work.

The new "human livery" at Southwest looks like this:
