FAA Aerospace Forecast Shows Trouble For GA

Piston-Engine Fleet Expected To Decline Over Next Two Decades

The FAA's long-range aerospace forecast released last week shows an anticipated decline in fixed-wing piston-engine airplanes over the next 20 years ... with the fleet shrinking by about 17,500 aircraft through 2036.

The Wichita Eagle reports that the decline is expected to be about 0.6 percent annually.

The overall GA fleet is expected to grow by 0.2 percent per year to over 210,600 aircraft in the same period, with the fastest growth in turbine aircraft, including jets, helicopters and turboprops.

If that forecast holds true, Wichita could feel the pinch. Textron makes many of the world's piston-engine airplanes through its Cessna and Beechcraft divisions. But there are also a lot of turboprops and jets manufactured in central Kansas.

The paper reports that, according to GAMA, Textron delivered 312 piston-engine airplanes in 2015 ... just under half of its total deliveries.
