F-18 Hornet Sleeps With The Fishes In San Diego Harbor

Pilot OK, apparently lost brakes on landing at NAS North Island

An F/A-18C Hornet pilot from Strike Fighter Squadron VFA-151 is in stable condition at Naval Medical Center, San Diego, after safely ejecting from his aircraft August 26 at approximately 2045.

The Hornet, embarked aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), was on an approach to NAS North Island. The pilot was unable to stop his aircraft and ended up just beyond the runway. The aircraft is now partially submerged near the runway in San Diego Harbor and efforts have begun to recover the $40 million aircraft by lifting it onto a barge.

"Preparations are under way right now to get the plane out of the water," base spokesman Steve Fiebing said. "A small amount of fuel leaked from the plane, but it is being contained at this time. There were no major fuel spills."

The pilot was recovered by the San Diego Harbor Police, and he told rescuers that the aircraft's brakes had failed after touching down. The pilot was shaken by the incident, but was not hurt.
