Gusting Winds Blow US Airways 737 Into Jet Ramp

Nobody Hurt But Aircraft "Is Going To Be On The Ground Awhile"

Straight winds clocked at 58 miles an hour roared through southwest Florida for a second day early Tuesday, blowing a US Airways 737 into a terminal jet ramp at Fort Myers' Southwest Florida International Airport.

Initial reports indicated no one was aboard the aircraft when the incident occurred at about 3:40 am EDT. The aircraft's empennage and wing were damaged.

"There's a pretty good dent right under the rudder," said WINK-TV photojournalist Darren Whitehead, speaking on his cell phone while inspecting the damaged aircraft. "They're working on it now. I think this plane is going to be on the ground for awhile."

No one was hurt in the pre-dawn incident and passengers aboard the flight, scheduled to take-off at 5:40 am, were quickly rerouted to another aircraft. They departed on time. The incident is, of course, under investigation.
