Plane Down At Stuart FL Air Show

Pilot Of The Grumman OV-1 Mohawk Fatally Injured

A pilot was fatally injured at the Stuart, FL Air Show when his plane went down on Witham Field (KSUA).

Television Station WPLG reports that the plane went down while practicing a routine for the show, which was scheduled to kick off at 5:00 Friday afternoon. FAA spokesman Rick Breitenfeldt told WPLG that the pilot was the only person on board the Grumman OV-1 Mohawk. The pilot was not identified.

The Grumman OV-1 Mohawk is a "twin-engine turboprop armed military observation and attack aircraft, designed for battlefield surveillance and light strike capabilities and was intended to operate from short, unimproved runways in support of United States Army maneuver forces," according to the air show web site.

The Stuart Air Show acknowledged the accident in a Tweet, saying "We've had an incident involving one of our aircraft. All local and federal agencies are on site and investigating so that we may ensure the safety of our airshow before we continue."

It was not reported whether the show would continue as scheduled through the weekend.
