Cirrus Down In North Of Toronto, Two Killed

SR-20 Impacted The Roof Of An Office Building

A Cirrus SR-20 with two aboard went down on top of an office building in the town of Markham north of Toronto, Canada Tuesday. Both people on board the aircraft were fatally injured.

The airplane had reportedly departed Buttonville Airport less than half a mile from the accident scene about 1230 EDT after a brief stop for unknown reasons. Dennis Flaherty, a spokesperson for the town of Markham, told the CBC that the plane was "experiencing problems" when it impacted the office building.

The SR-20 was based in Burlington, Canada, about 43 miles from the crash site. It was reportedly experiencing problems with its radios, and no flight plan was filed, so there was no record of who was on board at the time of the crash.

Witnesses to the accident said smoke was coming out of the airplane, and that it rolled before diving into the roof of the building. "There was a fairly large explosion," said York EMS operation supervisor Louise Lorenc. The building, which is the heaquarters of Thinkway Toys, was damaged, but only two minor injuries were reported among the 14 people in the building when the accident occurred.

Seven NTSB specialists have been sent to Canada to assist in the investigation.
