US Navy Contracts With Northrop Grumman For Three More E-2Ds

Advanced Hawkeye Recon Planes To Enter Service In 2001

The Pentagon announced this week Northrop Grumman was selected to build three more E-2D Advanced Hawkeye reconnaissance planes for the US Navy, in a deal worth $408 million in additional funding.

As ANN reported, Northrop unveiled the first E-2D airborne early warning plane in April. The company was awarded a $2 billion development contract in 2001, reports Reuters.

The Navy plans to eventually purchase 75 E-2Ds. The aircraft sport a Lockheed Martin APY-9 radar, which allows crews to detect smaller targets, further away than before.

A new rotodome, developed by L-3 Communications Randtron Antenna Systems, allows continuous 360-degree scanning capability, while adding an electronically scanned array. This system allows operators to focus the radar on selected areas of interest.

The Navy hopes to have the Advanced Hawkeyes in operation by 2011. Flight testing is due to begin this fall.
