Marines Lose Two Helos Off African Coast

Two People Rescued, Search Underway For 10 Others

ANN REALTIME UPDATE 02.17.06 1830EST: Marine officials say two of the combined 12 people onboard the two CH-53 Super Stallion helicopters that went down Friday near Djibouti have been rescued, and the search continues for the 10 who are still missing.

Each helicopter was carrying a crew of six, according to Pentagon officials.

Two US Marine Corps helos are reported down in the ocean off the coast of the African nation of Djibouti. Search and Rescue (SAR) efforts are reportedly under way and no concrete information has been developed as to the fate of the crews involved.

Both aircraft are currently reported to be CH-53E, which may be crewed by as few as three people or as many as eight according to Marine sources. 

For the moment , there are no reports of hostile fire involvement. both aircraft were based at Camp Lemonier, a French military base. The base the is headquarters for Task Force Horn of Africa, an operation designed to eliminate the infiltration of the region by terrorist elements.
