News Helicopter Crew Believes Their Aircraft Was Struck By A Drone

Made An Emergency Landing After Suspected Collision

The crew of the KABC Air7 HD news gathering helicopter made an emergency landing Thursday after something struck the helicopter's tail. The crew believes their aircraft was hit by a drone.

CNN reports that the new helo was flying at an altitude of about 1,100 feet when the crew heard a "pop", the a loud bang. Reporter Chris Cristi told KABC that at the time, they did not know what had hit them.

But on inspecting the damage, they said there was a possibility that it had been a drone. Whatever it was left a gouge on the tail boom of the helicopter, and a series of dents and scratches on other places on the aircraft.

Cristi said that the pilot said he had seen a flash of light, which could have been the red and green navigational lights on a drone.

A photo of the damage can be seen at the FMI link below.

The incident is under investigation.
