Holloman AFB To Hold 'A Gathering Of Nighthawks'

F-117A Racks Up 25 Years, 250,000 Flight Hours

Next month, all men and women who have worked with the F-117A program are invited to Holloman Air Force Base near Alamogordo, NM to commemorate the proud legacy of the F-117A Nighthawk stealth fighter and its more than 25 years of service.

The F-117A, known also as the stealth fighter (a measure, like much of the program, intended to throw off would-be spies early on -- the Nighthawk is in reality a ground-support bomber) was first flown in June 1981. For nearly seven years, the dart-shaped aircraft flew only at night -- to ward off inquiring eyes both on the ground, and from spy satellites far above it. The aircraft existed initially only in myth and rumor, until it publicly unveiled in 1988.

Over its 25 years of service, the "Black Jet" has achieved several aviation and military firsts, permanently etching the name Nighthawk into history.

Though slated for retirement in the near future, the Nighthawk flew its 250,000th flying hour on July 25, 2006 achieving one last major program milestone.

To commemorate the achievements of this ground-breaking aircraft, and the men and women who made the success of the F-117A possible, Holloman Air Force Base will host a celebration to recognize all those who have been a part of the program’s legacy over the years, as well as those who continue to support the program.

The two day celebration will begin October 27 with a retreat ceremony, and a historic multi-ship aerial review of F-117As from the 49th Fighter Wing. Any past contributor to the F-117A program wishing to attend the celebration may register on line at the Silver Stealth Web site after September 15, 2006.
