Dickson To Return To Capitol Hill

Slated To Testify Before The House Transportation And Infrastructure Committee

FAA Administrator Steven Dickson will be back on Capitol Hill next Wednesday, testifying before the The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. The topic of the hearing is the agency's review of Boeing's 737 MAX.

Dickson is currently the only witness scheduled for the hearing "The Boeing 737 MAX: Examining the Federal Aviation Administration’s Oversight of the Aircraft’s Certification" scheduled for December 11 at 10 a.m. in the Rayburn House Office Building. Other witnesses may be announced as the hearing date approaches.

Reuters reports that the FAA has said that it will not be delegating any ongoing review of the aircraft to Boeing, and will be the only source of airworthiness certificates for new 737 MAX airplanes that are built. The agency told Boeing that it has "determined that the public interest and safety in air commerce require that the FAA retain authority to issue airworthiness certificates and export certificates of airworthiness for all 737 MAX airplanes."

There are still several steps that must be accomplished before the FAA will allow the airplane to return to service, including a software audit by Boeing and certification test flights. Dickson, who is qualified to fly 737s, has said he will personally fly the airplane before signing off on a return to service.
