Tom Cruise Makes HALO Skydive Filming Latest 'Mission Impossible'

Jumped From A Cargo Plane Flying At 25,000 Feet

Actor Tom Cruise, who has a reputation for doing his own stunts in movies, has executed a doozy for the latest installment of "Mission Impossible".

Cruise completed what is known as a HALO skydive. HALO is an acronym for "High Altitude Low Opening" which is normally the purview of military professionals avoiding an enemy.

MSN reports that during filming for "Mission: Impossible - Fallout", Cruise jumped from a cargo aircraft flying at 25,000 feet or nearly five miles in altitude. He opened his parachute less than 2,000 feet above the ground, according to the filmmakers.

Such a jump carries the risk of "the bends" ... a condition normally associated with SCUBA diving. Cruise reportedly trained using a custom-built wind machine and special helmet for the jump, during which he reached speeds up 200 mph.

The studio has released a video of the stunt. The film is set for release next month.
